Mulberry S/S17 Pembroke In Smooth Calf

You’re not the only one if you think this bag’s silhouette is a tad familiar (no, I shan’t say more) but it does come with elements from Mulberry we’ve grown familiar in the last couple of years. Yes, the man behind this bag, and many other new creations like the Clifton and Cherwell, is Johnny Coca, who was previously working on leather goods for more than 15 years at brands like Céline and Louis Vuitton. And while he hasn’t quite created his very own ‘it’ bag as yet, you’ve got to give the man credit for trying, and this includes the new season Pembroke that’s the focus of today’s post.

Looking like a straightforward rectangular bag from the front, turn it to the side and the magic happens. Yes, the sides are shaped like an accordion, which simply means more room when you need it. Twist the ‘key’ on the lock and the bag opens to a lush suede lining with two equally-sized compartments placed front to back, separated by a zipped pocket in the centre. Want more? There’s a slip pocket at the back that provides quick access to your cards.

Another point of interest is the strap, in a braided pattern that’s done in the same colours that the bag’s body comes in. Finished with gold-tone hardware, all in all, it’s pretty chic. Retailing for GBP1240 online over on Mulberry, it should also be available in Singapore by now. And if this colour combination doesn’t exactly do it for you, do note that it also comes in Burgundy/Lemon, striped and another in embossed croc.

Mulberry Bayswater Buckle Bag

Mulberry-Small-Bayswater-Buckle-Bag-in-Black-Shrunken-Calf

It all started with the Mulberry Bayswater tote – a docter’s bag, still handcrafted in UK and everyone with a sense of fashion will recognize this iconic.
Up until today the Bayswater remains hot and for a long period of time, no new design inspired by this collection was introduced, The Bayswater was a one-bag collection.
Then mulberry started to change course, they introduced a new bag, the Bayswater Double Zipped Tote. It was like the original Bayswater tote and Alexa Satchel were melted together. The design was quite similar to the original Bayswater bag, but it has two compartments and it was finished with two buckles. Obviously for those that desire large spaces, this version is an excellent choice.
Mulberry didn’t stop there, shortly after another new bag was announced, it was the Bayswater shoulder bag.
So what happened?
They transformed the original Bayswater tote to a shoulder bag, with the same signature postman’s lock closure.
And still it doesn’t stop there, because today we are going to tell you another story, the Bayswater Buckle bag have been released in store. The design is entirely inspired by the original Bayswater tote, but there is a major difference – the size is much larger.
Measuring 24 x 49 x 18 (H x W x D) in cm, with double leather top handles, made from strong and durable calfskin. It’s available in poppy red, black, in multicolor or the classic brown.
So what do you think? Mulberry’s strategy to diversifying their Bayswater collection was a good idea or not?

Mulberry Might Be Trying to Hire Céline’s Accessories Design Director

Other Brands

Word on the street is that there might finally be some good news in the pipeline forMulberry. The struggling British brand, which has been without a creative director since fan-favorite Emma Hill left over conflicts with former CEO Bruno Guillon, is reportedly eying Johnny Coca, head of accessories design at handbag wunderkind Céline.

Coca’s been at Céline since 2009, and in that time, he’s overseen the design of handbags and shoes that have launched countless trends, from flared gussets to slip-on skate sneakers. He’s done it in the shadow of Phoebe Philo, though, and a mid-range, handbag-reliant brand like Mulberry would be a great spot for someone in Coca’s position to take the spotlight. Anouck Duranteau-Loeper, his colleague at Célineleft for Paco Robanne late last year.

No matter what the bags ended up looking like, such a move would certainly reinvigorate Mulberry; not only would it be a bright spot on which to build PR momentum, but it would ignite consumer interest in a way that few other hires might. Céline’s bags fly off shelves, even though it’s been a couple seasons since the brand introduced a bonafide hit, and Mulberry has plenty of fans remaining who would be thrilled to see the brand return to form.

According to Vogue UK, Blue Farrier, who recently left her post at Issa, and Hannah MacGibbon, who helmed Chloé prior to current creative director Clare Waight Keller, are also on the short list of potential contendors behind Coca. It’s unclear if Farrier has the accessories acumen that would be necessary at a brand like Mulberry, although MacGibbon’s tenure at Chloé did include several popular and profitable bags, like the Paraty and Marcy.

Who would you like to see at Mulberry’s helm?

  • Amazona

There’s only one Emma Hill. The Mulberry signature style has been altered so much after her departure it’s hard to recognize as the same brand…

  • XXL

I agree with Amazona. Based on what I know from the works of these named designers, I think Marcy is the most relevant to Mulberry so I vote for MacGibbon.

    • XXL

I also didn’t think Cara was the right model to represent Mulberry. She should be with Alexander Wang if anything. How do you go from Alexa to Cara? Cara is the cool badass Nasty Gal kinda chick and Mulberry is like the hipster of the brand name world. It just didn’t really make sense to me.

For Spring 2015, Mulberry Gets Its Groove Back

Mulberry Spring 2015 Bags 3

Mulberry’s various and sundry corporate challenges are well-documented and yet to be resolved, but London Fashion Week waits for no brand. For Spring 2015, the brand soldiered forth in a more subtle way than it has in recent years. Instead of a big production with global It Girl and brand ambassador Cara Delevingne, Mulberry put on a subtle presentation full of the kinds of pieces that made people Mulberry fans in the first place.

There were a few of the company’s popular Bayswater bags on display in preppy, spring-appropriate finishes and colors, but the star of the show was a pared-down, chain-strapped shoulder bag called the Delphie, which Mulberry claims can be worn six ways but is probably most recognizable as a small shoulder bag that can be easily converted into a medium-size clutch. Instead of the signature large turnlock closure, it featured a smaller, more modern metal button that, while bearing the Mulberrylogo, was less in-your-face than the Mulberry of the recent past.

Check out the collection below; are you feeling this scaled-back vibe?

Mulberry Got Cara Delevingne a Handbag Cake for her Birthday

Mulberry Cara Delevingne Handbag Cake

Yesterday was Cara Delevingne’s 22nd birthday, and considering that she’s an international It Girl and supermodel from a well-to-do London family, you’d be excused for not knowing exactly what to get her. Mulberry, the brand that loves Cara the very most, did not seem quite so stumped; it got her an edible Mulberry Cara Delevinge Bag, bathed in black fondant.

In this post-Cake Boss world, everything has the potential to be an object that is also a cake, and handbags, with their generally blocky shapes, are relative child’s play to the stunt bakers of the world. Even so, this cake is a particularly good example of the genre; when it first appeared on Mulberry’s Twitter account, I had to look at it very closely to make sure my eyes weren’t deceiving me.

They weren’t. The cake is, of course, modeled after Mulberry’s yet-to-hit-stores collaboration with Delevingne, which mostly involves adding quilting (and sometimes backpack straps or studs) to Mulberry’s popular Bayswater shape. Mulberry and Delevingne are currently in the middle of a huge publicity tour for the bags, so here’s hoping they show up in stores soon.

If you were going to get a handbag birthday cake, which bag would you choose?
